Insurance Basics
RV rental insurance protects you against damage to the RV, liability for injuries or property damage, and personal belongings loss. Unlike rental cars, RV insurance is more complex because of the vehicle's size, value, and the equipment inside.
Who's responsible? As the renter, you're financially responsible for any damage during your rental period. Without insurance, you could be on the hook for $5,000 to $150,000+ in repairs.
Types of Coverage
Comprehensive & Collision: Covers damage to the RV from accidents, weather, theft, and vandalism. This is the most important coverage.
- Typical deductible: $1,000-$3,000
- Cost: $15-30/day
Liability: Covers damage you cause to other people or property. Each US state sets minimum liability requirements; check your state's DMV or insurance department for the current statutory minimum.
- Often included in platform insurance (limits disclosed by the carrier at checkout)
Contents/Personal Effects: Covers your belongings inside the RV.
- Typical coverage: $1,000-$5,000
- Your homeowner's/renter's insurance may already cover this
Supplemental Liability Insurance (SLI): Extra liability coverage beyond the base amount.
- Worth considering for expensive areas or long trips
Your Existing Coverage
Before buying insurance through the platform, check:
- 1Auto insurance: Some policies extend to rental RVs. Call your agent and ask specifically about RVs (not just "rental vehicles").
- 2Credit card: Some premium cards (Chase Sapphire, Amex Platinum) offer rental vehicle coverage. But many exclude RVs and vehicles over a certain size. Read the fine print.
- 3Homeowner's/renter's insurance: May cover personal belongings inside the RV.
- 4Umbrella policy: May provide additional liability coverage.
Important: Get coverage confirmation in writing. "I think it's covered" isn't enough when you're facing a $20,000 repair bill.
Platform Insurance
Platform insurance is offered through a third-party carrier. Available tiers, daily rates, deductibles, liability limits, and add-ons (contents, roadside assistance, tire/windshield, interior damage) are disclosed by the carrier on the checkout page before you accept. Pricing varies by rig class, state, and trip dates. PickRV is not the underwriter.
Filing a Claim
If something happens:
- 1Document everything — photos, videos, police report if applicable
- 2Contact us within 24 hours — delay can void your claim
- 3Don't authorize repairs — we handle that
- 4Keep all receipts — towing, emergency lodging, etc.
- 5Be honest — fraud voids all coverage
Money-Saving Tips
- 1Check existing coverage first — you might not need platform insurance
- 2Choose Standard tier — best balance of cost and coverage for most renters
- 3Accept a higher deductible — if you're a careful driver, $3,000 deductible saves $7-15/day
- 4Skip contents coverage — if your renter's/homeowner's insurance covers it
- 5Don't double-pay — if your credit card covers collision, skip that portion
