Pre-Drive Checklist
Every time you drive, do a walk-around:
- ✅ All slides retracted
- ✅ Awning retracted and secured
- ✅ Steps retracted
- ✅ Entry door latched
- ✅ Roof vents closed
- ✅ Exterior compartments locked
- ✅ TV antenna down
- ✅ Power cord disconnected and stowed
- ✅ Water hose disconnected
- ✅ Mirrors adjusted
- ✅ Seat belts on all passengers
Inside: Secure everything. Close and latch all cabinet doors. Make sure the fridge is latched. Move anything on countertops to the floor or sink.
Driving Basics
Speed: Drive 5-10 mph under the speed limit, especially when loaded. Many states have lower speed limits for RVs and vehicles over 10,000 lbs.
Following distance: Maintain at least 4-5 seconds of following distance. More in rain or on downgrades.
Lane position: Stay in the right lane on highways. Use the left lane only for passing.
Braking: Start braking earlier than you would in a car. A loaded RV takes significantly longer to stop. Never ride the brakes on downgrades — use engine braking (lower gear).
Turns & Lane Changes
Right turns: Swing wide. The rear wheels track inside the front wheels (off-tracking). Pull past the turn before cranking the wheel.
Left turns: Wait for a complete gap. Your RV accelerates slowly, and you need the entire intersection.
Lane changes: Signal early (5-7 seconds). Check mirrors AND blind spots. Move over gradually — no quick jerks.
U-turns: Just don't. Find a parking lot or side street to turn around.
Backing Up
The #1 rule: If possible, don't back up. Plan routes and pull-through sites to avoid it. Many state-park campgrounds publish a site map online — pull-through sites are usually flagged with a "PT" suffix. If you reserve a back-in site, ask the campground host whether the approach angle is square (a 90° back-in) or skewed; skewed approaches are dramatically harder for first-time renters.
When you must back up:
- 1Get out and look behind the RV first. Note any low-hanging branches, picnic tables, fire rings, water spigots, or sewer risers. RV walls are thin — a low branch dragging across a slide topper can puncture it.
- 2Use a spotter (passenger outside with hand signals). Agree on a clear stop signal before you start — a closed fist or both hands raised both work. The driver stops immediately on the stop signal, no exceptions.
- 3Go slowly — walking pace. A loaded Class C at idle in reverse moves about 2–3 mph. That is the maximum speed you ever back up at, even on a flat empty lot.
- 4Use mirrors, not the backup camera alone. The camera lens distorts distances, especially in low light. Mirrors give you peripheral motion cues that the camera flattens out.
- 5Stop and reassess frequently. Pull forward and re-align if you feel the trailer or rear of the motorhome jackknifing more than 20° off the intended line.
- 6Turn the steering wheel in the direction you want the rear to go. For motorhomes this is intuitive. For travel trailers and fifth wheels it is reversed at first — the trailer pivots opposite the towing vehicle's front wheels, so think "bottom of the wheel."
Practice: Find an empty parking lot — many large grocery stores allow it after hours — and practice back-in maneuvers using cones or empty boxes. Spend at least 30 minutes practicing before you back into a real campsite for the first time.
Blind Spots & Mirror Drill
Every RV has blind spots dramatically larger than a passenger car. A Class A motorhome has a blind spot along the entire passenger side that can hide an entire compact car. Travel trailers add a second blind zone directly behind the trailer.
Daily mirror drill — repeat every time you switch drivers:
- 1Adjust the driver's-side flat mirror so you see the rear corner of your RV at the inside edge.
- 2Adjust the driver's-side convex (curved) mirror to extend the view outward — you should see one lane of traffic behind you and one lane to your left.
- 3Repeat on the passenger side. The passenger-side convex mirror is your most important asset for right-turn off-tracking.
- 4Test by walking around the rig with a friend in the driver's seat. They should be able to track you with mirrors alone from the front bumper, down both sides, and across the rear, with only a small gap immediately behind the rear bumper.
Lane-change protocol: Signal, count three seconds, glance at flat mirror, glance at convex, glance over shoulder (or use blind-spot monitor if equipped). Only then begin the lane change. The three-second pause gives cars in the convex blind zone time to move out.
Mountain Driving
Uphills:
- Shift to a lower gear before the grade, not during
- Accept that you'll be slow — 25-35 mph on steep grades is normal
- Use turnouts to let traffic pass
- Watch the temperature gauge — pull over if it climbs into the red
Downhills:
- Downshift to the same gear you used going up
- Never ride the brakes — they'll overheat and fade
- Tap brakes to slow, then release
- If brakes fade, use a runaway truck ramp immediately
Altitude: RVs lose about 3% power per 1,000 feet of elevation gain. A rig that handles hills fine at sea level may struggle at 10,000 feet.
Mountain Descents in Depth
Brake fade on a long descent is the single most common cause of catastrophic RV crashes per NHTSA's Large Truck and Bus Crash Facts annual reports. The mechanics are simple: hydraulic brakes convert kinetic energy to heat. On a sustained downgrade, that heat has nowhere to go and the brake fluid eventually boils — at which point the pedal goes to the floor and you have no service brakes.
The 7% rule. Any posted grade of 6% or steeper, lasting more than two miles, requires you to descend in a gear low enough that the engine holds the rig at or near your target speed with light or no brake application. If you find yourself riding the brake to stay below your target, you are already in the danger zone — pull over at the next turnout, let the brakes cool for 20–30 minutes, and re-descend in a lower gear.
Specific routes that demand respect: US-6 over Loveland Pass (CO), US-50 across the Sierra at Echo Summit (CA/NV), I-70 west of Denver (the eastbound descent into Idaho Springs is 6% for several miles), Teton Pass on WY-22, and the descent from Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park (MT). Many large rentals are explicitly prohibited on the Going-to-the-Sun Road — check the rental agreement and the park's vehicle restrictions page before routing.
Engine braking technique:
- 1Before the descent begins, downshift to the same gear you would use to climb the same grade.
- 2Set cruise control off. On a long downgrade, cruise control can fight your downshift.
- 3Monitor your speedometer. If speed creeps up more than 5 mph above target, downshift one more gear immediately.
- 4Use service brakes in firm short pulses ("snub braking") — apply firmly for 3–5 seconds to drop 5 mph, then release fully for 15–20 seconds to allow heat dissipation. Continuous light pressure is what causes fade.
- 5Watch for the smell of overheated brakes — a sharp acrid burning smell. If you smell it, stop at the next safe turnout.
Runaway truck ramps exist for a reason. If your brakes fail, take the ramp without hesitation. The gravel will damage tires and possibly axles, but the RV can be towed back. The alternative outcome is fatal.
Handling Wind
Wind is an RV driver's biggest challenge.
Crosswinds: Grip the wheel firmly at 9 and 3. Don't overcorrect — the RV will sway back. Reduce speed. If winds exceed 30 mph, consider stopping.
Passing semi-trucks: You'll feel a push-pull effect. Expect it, grip the wheel, and maintain your lane. Don't overcorrect.
Wind warnings: Take them seriously. A 45-mph crosswind can tip an RV.
Fuel-Stop Choreography
A fuel stop in a 30-foot motorhome is a small operation. Plan it like one.
Before you pull in:
- Check the satellite view in Google Maps or Apple Maps before committing. Look for a clear pull-through lane, room to swing the rig back to the road, and a back exit you can use if the front exit is blocked.
- Prefer truck stops (Love's, Pilot Flying J, TA, Petro). They are built for 75-foot tractor-trailers, so a 30-foot RV is trivial. Most have RV-specific lanes at the diesel pumps with high-flow nozzles.
- Know your RV's height (written inside, usually on the visor or above the driver's seat). Standard truck-stop canopies clear 13'6"+; standard gas-station canopies frequently are only 11'8"–12'6" and have crushed many awnings. If you do not know your height, do not enter a covered fuel island.
- Fill up when you hit half tank — stations are 60–100+ miles apart on some western interstates (I-80 in Nevada, US-50 "the loneliest road", US-93 in Idaho/Nevada). Run dry there and you are calling a tow truck for $400+.
At the pump:
- Fuel from the driver's side when possible — the fuel door is usually on the driver's side, but verify on your specific rig before approaching the pump.
- Pull forward past the pump so you can exit without backing up. If you cannot pull through, choose a station with an empty pump behind you.
- Walk around the rig before you leave. Confirm the fuel cap is on tight, the nozzle is back in the pump, no hoses are dragging.
- Check tire pressure on every other fuel stop using a digital gauge. Underinflation is the #1 cause of tire blowouts on motorhomes per NHTSA tire-safety guidance; a blowout on a dual-rear-wheel axle can rip out a brake line or fender flare.
Towing: Travel Trailer vs Fifth Wheel
If your rental is a towable rig (you supply the tow vehicle), the driving experience changes substantially depending on hitch type.
Travel trailer (bumper-pull / ball hitch):
- Coupled to a 2-5/16" or 2" ball mounted in the receiver hitch behind your tow vehicle's bumper.
- Pivots well behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle, which creates leverage. A crosswind gust hits the side of the trailer and the trailer pushes the rear of the tow vehicle sideways — this is the "tail wagging the dog" effect.
- Requires a weight-distribution hitch with sway control for anything over ~3,500 lbs. Without sway control, a strong gust or a passing semi can induce a sway oscillation that escalates quickly.
- Hard to back up — the trailer pivots opposite the tow vehicle's steering input, and over-corrections jackknife the trailer in seconds.
Fifth wheel (pin-box / fifth-wheel hitch):
- Coupled to a fifth-wheel plate mounted in the bed of a pickup truck, directly above or just behind the truck's rear axle.
- Pivots over the rear axle, so the trailer's weight transfers down through the truck's frame rather than levering off the bumper. Far more stable in crosswinds and when passing semis.
- Carries more cargo for a given length because the front 4–5 feet of the trailer sit over the truck bed (the gooseneck).
- Easier to back up because the pivot point is much closer to the tow vehicle's rear wheels. Most experienced fifth-wheel drivers can back into a campsite in fewer tries than they can with an equivalent-length travel trailer.
Practical implication: If you have never towed before, a fifth wheel is more forgiving on the highway but requires a pickup truck with a bed-mounted hitch (most rental fifth wheels require you to bring or rent a compatible truck). A travel trailer can be towed by an SUV with the right hitch class, but demands much closer attention to sway control and crosswinds.
Narrow Bridges, Low Clearances, Tunnels
Height. Know your RV's overall height including roof-mounted AC units, antennas, and any solar panels. Bridges and tunnels are marked in feet and inches. Add at least 6 inches of safety margin — frost heaves can lift roadway by several inches, and AC shrouds vary in height across model years.
Width. Standard RV width is 8 feet 6 inches. Narrow rural bridges marked "Single Lane" or with weight/width restrictions need a slow approach and a willingness to wait for oncoming traffic to clear. Mirrors add 6–12 inches of effective width on each side — fold them in for the tightest passages if they are manually adjustable.
Tunnels with hazmat restrictions. Several major tunnels (the Holland Tunnel in NYC, the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel, the Eisenhower Tunnel west of Denver) prohibit propane-equipped vehicles or require propane tanks turned off and valves closed. Plan routes that avoid these tunnels or stop before entering to shut off propane at the tank. Most modern RVs include a propane shutoff at the regulator — locate it on your rental before you depart.
Route planning tools. Apps like RV Trip Wizard, CoPilot RV, and Google Maps' truck routing layer (where available) flag low clearances. They are not perfect — verify any flagged hazard against a road sign or a recent satellite photo. Cross-check with state DOT bridge-clearance lists for any route that crosses rural counties.
Night-Drive Guidance
Night driving in an RV is meaningfully riskier than night driving in a car, for three reasons: longer stopping distance, larger blind spots that low-light eyes cannot compensate for, and fatigue that compounds across a long highway day.
The 75-mile rule. Plan to be parked at your campsite or boondock spot at least 60 minutes before sunset. The last 60 minutes of daylight gives you margin to set up before twilight, and avoids the dusk hour when wildlife is most active near rural roads. The 75-mile rule is a planning heuristic — at 60 mph cruising speed, 75 miles is 75 minutes, which gives you a full hour of buffer after subtracting setup time.
If you must drive at night:
- Slow down 10 mph below your daytime speed.
- Increase following distance to 6+ seconds.
- Keep high beams on whenever no oncoming traffic is within 1,000 feet, but be ready to dim immediately.
- Eat lightly and avoid heavy meals in the 2 hours before driving. A full stomach pulls blood to digestion and accelerates drowsiness.
- Stop every 90 minutes minimum. A 10-minute walk around a rest area resets attention better than coffee.
Wildlife. Deer, elk, and moose are most active dawn, dusk, and the first 2 hours after dark. A collision with a 1,200-pound moose can total a motorhome and kill occupants — both moose and deer often emerge unpredictably from roadside brush. Slow to 45 mph through posted wildlife zones at night and scan the road shoulders constantly.
Construction zones. Night construction is common on interstates in the West. Lane shifts and narrowed lanes are harder to read in headlight glare. If you encounter active night construction, slow to the posted construction speed (often 45 mph) and stay in the rightmost open lane.
