Cody was founded by Buffalo Bill Cody in 1896 specifically to capitalize on Yellowstone's east-entrance tourism — and the Buffalo Bill Center of the West's five museums hold the largest single collection of Plains Indian, firearms, and Western-frontier ethnographic material in North America.
Park County wraps Yellowstone's East Entrance approach through Shoshone National Forest (the first congressionally-designated national forest, 1891), the Sunlight Basin via the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway, and the Beartooth Highway's southern terminus at Cooke City. Shoshone NF dispersed camping along the North Fork Shoshone River (the 50-mile US-20 corridor between Cody and Yellowstone) holds the densest concentration of RV-friendly free pullouts in the Yellowstone gateway region.
