The county in brief
A traveler's read on Sweetwater County
Sweetwater is the largest Wyoming county by area (10,491 sq mi) and holds the Red Desert — a 9,000-sq-mi sagebrush sea that is one of the largest unfenced areas in the contiguous US, with the Continental Divide splitting around the Great Divide Basin to enclose a no-outlet drainage. The Wild Horse Scenic Loop Tour east of Rock Springs holds the highest population density of free-roaming wild horses on BLM-managed land in the lower 48.
Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area straddles the Wyoming-Utah line and runs 91 miles of reservoir RV-friendly shoreline with concessioner-operated full-hookup loops at Buckboard Crossing and Lucerne Valley. Rock Springs (population 23,036) is the only Interstate 80 corridor town with big-box grocery between Rawlins and Evanston.
