UT-12 was designated an All-American Road in 2002 because the 124-mile span from Panguitch to Torrey crosses four ecological zones (juniper-pinyon at 6,500 ft, Ponderosa at 8,000 ft, aspen at 9,500 ft, and a 11,000-ft rim crossing on Boulder Mountain) in three hours of driving — and the Hogback section between Boulder and Escalante carries a 14-ft-wide shoulder-less ridge with sheer drops both sides, a documented rig-rattler for anything over 35 ft. Garfield County wraps Bryce Canyon NP, the western quarter of Capitol Reef NP, and most of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument inside 5,208 sq mi of mostly federal land. Panguitch (population 1,664) is the only town with full grocery + diesel between Cedar City and Escalante.
