Flash flooding in the side canyons defines half the planning for any Capitol Reef trip. Fruita Campground sits on the floodplain of the Fremont River — the park has evacuated it twice in the last decade when summer monsoon dumped 2+ inches of rain on the Waterpocket Fold upstream — and the NWS issues a separate forecast for the Reef's drainage basin July through September. Fruita holds 71 sites with a 35-ft cap and runs year-round; no hookups, no on-site dump in winter (the dump station closes when the heated bay shuts down). Capitol Gorge Road and the Burr Trail are gravel-surface scenic spurs that should never be attempted in rigs over 30 ft or during a monsoon watch. Scenic Drive proper handles 35 ft to its terminus at Capitol Gorge trailhead.
