Big Cypress National Preserve holds the largest contiguous freshwater cypress swamp in North America — 729,000 acres of sloughs, dome forest, and prairie that drain south into Everglades NP, and the only NPS-designated preserve (vs. park) that permits motorized off-road use through a Tribal-era General Management Unit permit system.
Collier County wraps the Big Cypress, the western Everglades estuary at Ten Thousand Islands, and Naples on the Gulf Coast. The Tamiami Trail US-41 crosses the entire south-Florida hydroperiod from Miami to Naples with rig-friendly two-lane geometry, but the Loop Road (CR-94) gravel cutoff into Big Cypress is rig-capped at 25 ft by NPS posting due to soft shoulders. Everglades NP's Gulf Coast Visitor Center at Everglades City is the boat-access launching point for the Ten Thousand Islands backcountry.
