37,000 acres of dry prairie, oak hammock, and the Myakka River corridor inland from Sarasota — one of Florida's first state parks (1934) and one of its largest. The Old Prairie Campground holds 76 sites with 30/50-amp electric and water hookups, 40-ft cap, year-round; Big Flats Campground is smaller and similar. Dump station at Big Flats. The Wilderness Preserve section requires a separate permit and caps daily visitation at 30 people — the only such cap in the Florida system. Alligators concentrate at the Birdwalk and the Upper Myakka Lake spillway in numbers that genuinely shock first-time visitors; the Canopy Walkway 25 feet above the hammock floor is the safer wildlife-view perch. Reservations open 11 months ahead and February-March snowbird weekends fill in minutes.
