The Imperial Sand Dunes — also known as the Algodones Dunes — are the largest mass of sand dunes in California, formed from windblown sands of ancient Lake Cahuilla in the state's southeastern corner. The dune system extends more than 40 miles in a band averaging about 5 miles wide, with dunes often reaching 300 feet above the desert floor. Managed by the Bureau of Land Management, it sits east of Brawley and is reached via Interstate 8 west of Yuma, Arizona.

Within the larger area, the North Algodones Dunes Wilderness offers a quieter, vehicle-free alternative — open to hiking and horseback riding across more than 26,000 acres of remote dunes.
