Near Twentynine Palms
NPSInsider tip · 124 sites scattered between monolithic granite boulders — every site is its own private climbing wall. No water on tap; haul gallons in from Twentynine Palms. Sites 67-78 cluster near 'Skull Rock' trailhead — sunset 30-minute walk-out.
Near Three Rivers
NPSInsider tip · Closest paved camp to General Sherman Tree — 4.5 miles. Bear box at every site; rangers will revoke your reservation if food is left out. Sites 100-150 sit creek-side for white-noise sleep.
Near Furnace Creek
NPSInsider tip · Only NPS campground in Death Valley with hookups. Summer (June-Aug) is walk-up only and free — but daytime hits 115°F+; arrive at sunset, leave at sunrise. The Texas Spring overflow loop a quarter-mile up has the only real shade.

NPSInsider tip · Lassen is the least-visited NPS unit in California — even in August you can walk away from the lake at 8am and have it to yourself. Camper cabins (separate booking) come fully furnished except linens.
Near Los Osos
StateInsider tip · No hookups, no showers — but you wake to seals barking and surf 200 ft from the tent. Sites 1-19 are walk-in (50-200 ft from parking); sites 20-47 are drive-in but smaller. The 'Bluff Trail' starts at the day-use lot a quarter-mile north.

StateInsider tip · Largest state park in California — 600,000 acres. Super-bloom March of wet years draws crowds; check 'desert-usa.com' wildflower report before booking. The full-hookup loop is the only one in the entire park; book that first.
