Kelso Dunes: An RV Traveler's Guide

The sand traveled roughly 35 miles from the Mojave River sink before the wind, blocked by the Providence and Granite mountains, dropped it into the towering slopes you see today.

Under the right dry conditions the dunes can produce a deep, eerie rumble — a booming sound you can feel through your body — a phenomenon shared by only a few dune fields on the continent.

The route to the crest is about 3 miles round-trip with roughly 600 feet of elevation gain; confirm road access, conditions, and any closures on the National Park Service site, as this is a remote desert destination.
