Kīlauea has been actively erupting on and off since 1983 — the 2018 Halema'uma'u eruption rerouted Crater Rim Drive permanently, the 2023 summit eruption added new lava to the caldera floor, and the air-quality VOG (volcanic fog) advisory drives daily visit planning on the south side of the island. Nāmakanipaio Campground (concessioner-operated by Volcano House) accepts rigs up to 35 ft, runs year-round, dry-camp, no dump station. Kulanaokuaiki Campground is tent-only. Chain of Craters Road handles 35-ft rigs the full descent to the coast but the ranger-staffed turnaround at the lava flow's edge varies year to year. Most RV rentals in Hawaii are van-conversion units; bringing a Class A from the mainland is not commercially practical.
