The road to Haleakalā summit climbs from sea level to 10,023 ft in 38 miles — the steepest sustained ascent of any paved road in the world per US Geological Survey grade studies — and the temperature drop runs 30°F in winter from coast to summit. Hosmer Grove Campground at 6,800 ft accepts rigs up to 25 ft, dry-camp, first-come-first-served. Kīpahulu Campground at the coastal Kīpahulu District (the famous Pīpīwai Trail trailhead) is similar at 25 ft. No dump station in either. Sunrise viewing at the summit requires a separate timed-entry reservation, $1 admin fee, opens 60 days ahead; rigs over 25 ft are physically restricted from the summit road's final switchback section above Kalahaku Overlook.
