The county in brief
A traveler's read on St. Louis County
St. Louis is the largest county by area east of the Mississippi River (6,225 sq mi, larger than Connecticut) and the only US county to span the entire Lake Superior north shore from Duluth to the Canadian border.
Duluth (population 86,697) at the western tip of Lake Superior is the world's most-inland saltwater seaport — ocean-going freighters from the Atlantic transit the St. Lawrence Seaway and Great Lakes to reach the Twin Ports of Duluth-Superior. Jay Cooke State Park on the St. Louis River accepts rigs to 50 ft with electric hookups; Voyageurs NP at the county's far north is the only US national park accessible primarily by boat.
