Santa Fe at 7,199 ft is the highest state-capital elevation in the US and the oldest capital city in North America (founded 1610 by Spanish colonial governor Pedro de Peralta) — a 24-year head-start on Boston and a 200-year head-start on Washington DC. The city's adobe-only building code applies to all new construction within the historic district, the only such code in the US.
Santa Fe County wraps the eastern Jemez Mountains, the Sangre de Cristo's southern foothills, and the I-25 corridor between Albuquerque and the Colorado line. Bandelier NM (40 miles west into Sandoval County's Frijoles Canyon) is the canonical NPS day-trip from Santa Fe; the park's Juniper Campground accepts rigs up to 40 ft on a dry-camp first-come basis with mid-March to mid-October season.
