A traveler's read on Eddy County

Four thousand feet long, 625 ft wide, and 350 ft tall — those are the interior dimensions of the Big Room at Carlsbad Caverns, the seventh-largest single cave chamber in the world by volume per Karst Information Portal database surveys, accessible to visitors by a 750-ft direct elevator drop from the visitor center or by the more contemplative 1.25-mile descending natural-entrance walking trail that follows the same path early-20th-century guano miners used to enter the cave system. The cave preserves an unusually rare combination of speleothems including helictites that grow against gravity, soda-straw stalactites longer than 20 ft, and dramatic bell-shaped formations from a sulfuric-acid speleogenesis process (Hill et al., 1995) different from most North American limestone caves.

The park's Mexican free-tailed bat colony, up to 400,000 individuals per summer 2023 NPS counts, emerges in evening flight every dusk April through October from the natural entrance — the NPS hosts a free evening bat-flight program at the amphitheater. Eddy County wraps the park, the western Guadalupe Mountains foothills approaching Guadalupe Mountains National Park (which sits in Texas just across the state line), and the heart of the Permian Basin oil-and-gas economy that has driven a 30%+ population increase in Carlsbad town over the past decade per US Census ACS estimates. The Living Desert State Park on the city's northwest edge holds a small zoo of Chihuahuan Desert flora and fauna. Brantley Lake State Park 12 miles north accepts rigs to 50 ft with electric hookups across 51 sites, the only New Mexico state-park RV-friendly base inside Eddy County. The park itself has no campground per the CAVE Foundation Document — nearest hookups route to Carlsbad RV Park & Campground inside the city.
