Ten thousand feet of average elevation across a 1,000-sq-mi treeless grassland basin defines Park County CO — the South Park geological intermontane basin, ringed by the Mosquito Range to the west (peaking at Mt. Park County is one of only four Colorado counties in which the entire incorporated and unincorporated population sits above 8,000 ft elevation per US Geological Survey topographic mapping; the air at that altitude carries 26% less oxygen than sea level per atmospheric pressure equations, an operational consideration for any rig generator, propane appliance, or carbureted engine. Fairplay (population 749, the county seat at 9,953 ft) holds the South Park City open-air museum (35 relocated 19th-century mining-town buildings preserved on a single town block) — the only continuously-curated, publicly-accessible gold-rush ghost-town reconstruction in Colorado.

Eleven Mile State Park on the 3,400-acre Eleven Mile Reservoir accepts rigs to 60 ft with electric hookups on 332 sites spread across 9 campgrounds — the largest Colorado state-park RV-friendly base in the South Park basin, and reservations through Colorado Parks & Wildlife open 6 months ahead with all summer-weekend dates routinely selling out within minutes of release. Spinney Mountain Reservoir 8 miles upstream is a day-use-only Gold Medal trout fishery managed by CPW. Pike National Forest dispersed camping is permitted under the standard 14-day limit on the Tarryall Creek, Geneva Creek, and Buffalo Creek corridors, with rigs to 30 ft accommodated and food-storage orders active May-November per Forest Order 2024-R2-PSI. US-285 (the Top of the Rockies National Scenic Byway from Denver to Salida) crosses Kenosha Pass at 10,001 ft and Red Hill Pass at 9,993 ft — both routinely chained in winter under CDOT Code R-1 traction laws per the I-70 corridor's Cottonwood / Vail / Berthoud regulations. The 2002 Hayman Fire (the largest wildfire in Colorado history until eclipsed by the 2020 Cameron Peak fire) burned 138,000 acres in northern Park County and the regrowth landscape still shows the burn signature east of Lake George.
