Costilla County
County seat San Luis, 1,227 sq mi across Colorado. Everything an RV traveler should read before rolling in — where you can boondock, the roads worth the detour, and the local rule that actually matters.

The county in brief
A traveler's read on Costilla County
San Luis is the oldest continuously occupied town in Colorado — founded April 5, 1851 by Hispano settlers under a Mexican land grant predating Colorado statehood by 25 years, and the parish acequia irrigation system still routes water by 173-year-old water rights. Costilla County sits in the southern San Luis Valley at 7,500 ft basin elevation, flanked by the Sangre de Cristo Range east and the San Juan/Conejos peaks west. The Vermejo Park Ranch private inholding (now Ted Turner's bison ranch) crosses into the county from the south.
Great Sand Dunes National Park's main entrance is in Saguache County to the north but the southern approach via CO-150 from San Luis crosses Costilla County's eastern Sangre slope, with no RV-friendly campgrounds along the route until reaching Pinyon Flats inside the park.
