One thousand and two feet — the depth of the Mother Spring in downtown Pagosa Springs, verified by Guinness World Records in 2011 as the world's deepest measured geothermal hot spring. The mineral-rich Mother Spring (155°F at the surface, with sulfur, sodium chloride, and dissolved silica concentrations cited by US Geological Survey hot-spring inventories) feeds 24 commercial and public soaking pools spread across the historic downtown core, anchored by the riverside Springs Resort. Archuleta County's 1,356 sq mi wrap the eastern San Juan Mountains, Wolf Creek Pass (10,856 ft on US-160, the snowiest mountain pass in Colorado at an average 459 inches per winter per Colorado Avalanche Information Center 30-year normals — more than any other paved-highway pass in the contiguous United States), and the Chimney Rock National Monument (the Pueblo II Ancestral Puebloan ceremonial site established as the southernmost outlier of the Chaco regional system around 1100 CE, redesignated a national monument by President Obama in September 2012).

The Wolf Creek Ski Area at the pass summit holds the longest US ski season most years (typically late October through April, with bonus weekends into May when snowpack supports), and the pass is mandatory chain-up under Colorado Code R-1 traction laws from November through May for any commercial vehicle and frequently for passenger vehicles after first measurable snowfall. San Juan National Forest dispersed camping is permitted under the 14-day stay limit on the West Fork San Juan, East Fork San Juan, Piedra River, and Williams Creek corridors, with most pullouts accommodating rigs to 30 ft. Williams Creek Forest Service Campground and East Fork Forest Service Campground (both off Piedra Road north of Pagosa Springs) accept rigs to 30 ft on first-come basis with no hookups; reservations are not offered for either. City of Pagosa Springs Municipal Code §15.04 prohibits overnight RV street parking on US-160 inside town limits — the South Side Park-N-Ride lot is the only town-tolerated overnight RV stop and is signed 72-hour maximum. Pagosa Springs (population 1,734, the county seat) and Aspen Springs (an unincorporated subdivision of 4,400+ residents — Archuleta County's actual largest population cluster) anchor the county.
