Nye is the third-largest county by area in the contiguous US (18,159 sq mi) and contains the entire eastern boundary of Death Valley National Park plus the western Nevada Test Site/Nellis Range military closure zone. NV-375 is officially designated the Extraterrestrial Highway by the State of Nevada's tourism office — a 98-mile two-lane Great Basin transit between US-93 and US-6, anchored by the town of Rachel (population 51) and the unmarked back-gate of Area 51.
Tonopah (population 2,148) at 6,030 ft is the county seat and a former silver-mining boom town. BLM dispersed camping on the Pahranagat and Railroad Valley public lands accepts rigs of any length on the dry-lake-bed playas.
