The county in brief
A traveler's read on White Pine County
US-50 between Ely and Fernley earned the LIFE magazine moniker 'Loneliest Road in America' in 1986 — a 287-mile two-lane Great Basin transit that crosses 11 basin-and-range valleys with the only fuel and food at Eureka and Austin, towns of 478 and 167 residents respectively.
White Pine County wraps Great Basin NP and the entire 13,063-ft Wheeler Peak crest. Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive in the park climbs to 9,886 ft Bristlecone Trailhead, capped at 24 ft length above the Mather Overlook switchback by NPS posting. Upper Lehman Creek and Lower Lehman Creek campgrounds accept rigs to 30 ft on first-come basis. Ely (population 4,255) at 6,437 ft is the only full-service grocery + diesel on US-50 between Salt Lake and Carson City.
