Lake Tahoe's northern shore sits inside Washoe County's southwest corner — at 1,645 ft maximum depth Tahoe is the largest alpine lake in North America and the second-deepest lake in the United States, with 75% of the lake's eastern shore on the Nevada side of the state line.
Pyramid Lake on the Paiute Tribal Reservation 35 miles northeast of Reno is the largest remnant of Pleistocene Lake Lahontan — at 6,392 ft elevation and 188 sq mi surface, it holds the world's only natural population of Lahontan cutthroat trout. Reno (population 264,165) is the resupply anchor for any rig staging Burning Man via the Black Rock Desert, with the I-80 corridor running 70 miles north to Gerlach.
