Second, the Burning Man departure surge along I-80 east toward Wadsworth and US-95 north toward Empire creates a 40-hour vehicle convoy each Labor Day weekend that fully books every campground between Sparks and Pyramid Lake from late August through the first week of September; KOA Reno and Bonanza Terrace RV Park typically post wait-list-only status by July 1.
Third, the Lake Tahoe rim corridor on the California side is governed by TRPA scenic restrictions and most lakefront state parks (DL Bliss, Sugar Pine Point) sit on the California side with their own reservation windows opening 7 months out at reservecalifornia.com — not the Nevada Reserve America system. Plan dump and propane at Sparks east of town and stage west toward Truckee only after smoke maps clear.
When to come
Best: Mid-May through mid-October: 75-90 F highs, all Sierra and Pyramid Lake roads open, Tahoe rim drivable. Trade-off: wildfire smoke from late June through October.
Your first hour in Reno
Before you leave the lot
- Top off propane at U-Haul (655 S Wells Ave) or AmeriGas Sparks before pushing to Pyramid Lake or Tahoe — no propane refill on the Pyramid loop.
- Buy a Pyramid Lake Tribal day-use + camping permit at the Sutcliffe office or pyramidlake.us before driving north; rangers cite without warning.
Before you park overnight
- Do not park overnight on any downtown Reno street or in a casino self-park structure (most 6'9" clearance). Stick to KOA, Sparks Marina, or Bonanza Terrace.
Also worth doing
- Confirm KOA Boomtown, Sparks Marina, or Bonanza Terrace reservation BEFORE driving in if you arrive late Aug / early Sep — Burning Man corridor cleans out availability.
- Check Caltrans CHP I-80 over Donner Summit chain control status before any Truckee/Tahoe trip Nov-Mar.
- Plan Tahoe-side state park stays via reservecalifornia.com — California-side parks (DL Bliss, Sugar Pine Point, Emerald Bay) use a different reservation system than Nevada.
- Check CAL FIRE and InciWeb for Sierra fire activity before any westbound Tahoe or Truckee trip June-October.
The mistake renters make
Pulling a Class A into a downtown casino self-park garage assuming the height clearance is the same as an interstate underpass. Eldorado, Silver Legacy, and Circus Circus self-park structures cap at 6'9" - any rig above will hit the entry bar. Repair to A/C unit and air horn ranges $1,500-$4,000; insurance often excludes "struck overhead structure" claims in posted-clearance zones.

Reno Municipal Code Chapter 6 (Traffic)
Vehicles parked on Reno public streets must fit within marked parking dimensions; oversize vehicles prohibited from on-street metered spaces in the downtown casino corridor. A Class C overhanging the meter strip in the downtown corridor draws an immediate citation. Use the Reno Aces Stadium peripheral lots or stay at a campground and ride RTC Ride.
