A traveler's read on Grand County

Eight thousand three hundred and sixty-seven feet of elevation makes Grand Lake the highest large natural lake in Colorado and the namesake source-lake of the Colorado River — still called the Grand River until the US Congress legally renamed it the Colorado in 1921 at the urging of the Colorado state legislature. The Colorado then carves 1,450 miles south through the Grand Canyon and into Mexico before reaching the Sea of Cortez delta (when actual water reaches the delta — most years since 1998 the river runs dry in Mexico per US Bureau of Reclamation Colorado River Basin reports). The Grand Lake Yacht Club (founded 1902) is the highest-elevation chartered yacht club in the world per Yachting magazine's historical roster. Grand County's 1,869 sq mi wrap the western entrance of Rocky Mountain National Park (the Grand Lake / Kawuneeche Valley gate), Winter Park Resort (Colorado's longest continuously-operated ski resort, founded 1939 by the City and County of Denver and still operating under a Denver Mountain Parks lease), the Williams Fork Mountains, and the upper Colorado River from its Rocky Mountain National Park headwaters down through Granby, Hot Sulphur Springs, Kremmling, and into the Gore Canyon.

Timber Creek Campground inside RMNP's west side (98 sites, no hookups) accepts rigs to 30 ft and is the only NPS-operated RV-friendly base on the Grand Lake side of the park, with reservations through recreation.gov opening 6 months out. Trail Ridge Road (US-34, the highest continuous paved road in the United States at 12,183 ft at its summit) crosses the Continental Divide between Grand Lake and Estes Park; the road closes by snowfall typically mid-October and reopens late May per NPS Trail Ridge Road historical conditions, leaving a 4-5 month open window. RMNP's vehicle-length restriction caps rigs at 30 ft above Onahu Creek per NPS Compendium §1.5(a) safety determination, so anything larger must enter from the east (Estes Park) side. Arapaho National Recreation Area at Lake Granby (a Bureau of Reclamation reservoir transferred to USFS administration in 1978) operates 5 USFS campgrounds accepting rigs to 35 ft. Town of Granby (population 2,067) is the practical resupply anchor with full grocery, propane, and diesel.
