What it is
A teardrop camper is a small towable trailer with a single enclosed sleeping cabin and an external (usually rear-hatch) outdoor kitchen / galley.
Length range 8-13 ft. Dry weight typically 700-1,800 lbs.
Built for couples or single travelers. No bathroom (some have portable cassette toilet). The galley kitchen is exterior-only, accessed by lifting a rear hatch.
Recommended tow vehicle
Standard teardrop (700-1,200 lbs dry, 1,000-1,500 lbs GVWR): Almost any vehicle with a Class II or Class III receiver. SUVs, crossovers, even Subaru Outback or Honda Civic with factory tow package.
Larger / off-road teardrop (1,200-1,800 lbs dry, 1,800-2,500 lbs GVWR): SUVs (4Runner, Honda Pilot), half-ton trucks. Off-road teardrops have higher ground clearance and tougher suspension for backcountry.
Who it fits
Couple wanting the easiest possible towable experience — almost any vehicle tows, setup is zero (just park and go).
Backcountry / dispersed camper wanting a roof, bed, and a kitchen at a trailhead.
Sedan or crossover owner without a pickup or capable SUV.
Pitfalls (honest)
No bathroom inside. Plan campground or dispersed bathroom alternatives.
External galley means cooking happens outside in the weather. Rain awning is a typical add-on.
Sleeping for 2 — third person is not viable. Solo travelers fit comfortably.

FAQs
Can a sedan tow a teardrop?
Some sedans with factory tow packages (Subaru Outback wagon, Volvo XC60) can tow the lightest teardrops (under 1,500 lbs GVWR) — verify your specific tow rating. Most sedans without tow packages cannot.
How do I cook?
Teardrops have an external galley accessed by lifting the rear hatch. Propane stove, sink (with portable water), counter space. Many teardrops include the stove and basic cookware.
Is there a bathroom?
Inside, no. Some teardrops include a portable cassette toilet as an option. Most renters plan around campground or dispersed bathroom alternatives.
Verify your tow vehicle can pull this trailer before you book.
