Brake Controller Guide — Trailer Electric Brakes Explained on PickRV

Trailers over 3,000 lbs have electric brakes on the trailer's axles (sometimes hydraulic surge brakes on smaller utility trailers). Electric brakes need the tow vehicle to send a signal to engage them.

Without a brake controller, the trailer's brakes do not work. The tow vehicle's brakes alone must stop the entire combination — drastically reduced stopping power on heavy trailers.

Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) does not federally mandate brake controllers but every US state has its own law setting the threshold above which trailer brakes are required.

Every US state requires brake controller for trailers over 3,000 lbs GVWR. Some states (California, Utah) set the threshold lower — 1,500 lbs in California, 750 lbs in Utah.

Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas have higher thresholds — typically 4,500 lbs GVWR.

When crossing state lines, the strictest threshold applies. A trailer at 2,000 lbs that doesn't need brakes in Texas needs them in California.

Most PickRV trailers fall above the 3,000-lb threshold; brake controller is required for all of them.

Integrated brake controllers are built into newer tow vehicles (Ford F-150 since 2008, RAM 1500 since 2013, Chevrolet/GMC since 2015). They're factory-tuned and require no aftermarket installation.

Aftermarket brake controllers are installed in older tow vehicles. Tekonsha (P3 and Prodigy series), Hayes, and Curt are common brands. Installation requires connecting to the tow vehicle's brake light circuit and the trailer's 7-pin connector.

PickRV's pre-trip verification checks for working brake controller in any bring-your-own-truck rental. The host verifies the brake controller is functional before the renter leaves.

Proportional brake controllers (Tekonsha P3, Curt Echo, and similar accelerometer-based units) sense the tow vehicle's deceleration via an internal accelerometer and apply trailer brakes proportionally. Smoothest braking; preferred for heavy trailers.

Time-delayed brake controllers (cheaper aftermarket units) apply trailer brakes on a ramp-up timer based on tow vehicle brake-light signal. Less smooth; adequate for lighter trailers.

Proportional is the modern standard. Time-delayed is functional but harsher.

Adjust the gain (intensity) at the start of each trip. Start at the middle setting; test in an empty parking lot.

Drive 25 mph and apply trailer brakes manually (most controllers have a thumb-lever for renter-applied trailer braking).

If the trailer's brakes lock, reduce gain. If the trailer pushes the tow vehicle, increase gain.

Re-test after each significant cargo loading change.
