Tow Capacity Explained — SAE J2807, Payload Math on PickRV

GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating): the maximum weight of your tow vehicle alone — chassis + body + fluids + occupants + cargo + tongue/pin weight of trailer. Stamped on the door jamb sticker.

GCWR (Gross Combined Weight Rating): the maximum weight of tow vehicle + trailer + everything in both. Found in the owner's manual.

Payload: the difference between GVWR and the empty curb weight of the tow vehicle. This is the math that catches first-timers — passengers, cargo, AND tongue/pin weight all count against payload.

Tow Capacity: the maximum trailer weight the tow vehicle can pull. Often the headline number on truck advertising; less informative than GCWR for real trips.

SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) J2807 is the tow rating standard adopted by US manufacturers between 2014-2017. Ford 2015, Chevrolet/GMC 2014, Toyota 2017, Ram 2015.

J2807 specifies test conditions for tow rating — Davis Dam grade ascent, 11-percent grade simulation, hot weather, full cooling system stress. A J2807-rated tow vehicle can sustain its published tow rating under demanding conditions.

Pre-J2807 ratings (cars + trucks before 2014) may over-state tow capability in mountain conditions or hot weather. Verify J2807 compliance on your tow vehicle's model-year.

The published tow rating assumes the tow vehicle is near-empty — driver only, near-empty fuel, no cargo. Real-world towing adds passengers, gear, water, propane, generators — all of which count against payload.

Example math: Ford F-150 XLT 4x4 SuperCrew with 5.0L V8 and Max Tow package. Published tow rating: 11,500 lbs. Curb weight: 5,200 lbs. GVWR: 7,050 lbs. Payload: 1,850 lbs.

Pulling a 9,000-lb travel trailer with 12% tongue weight: tongue weight = 1,080 lbs. Add 4 passengers (700 lbs) + camping gear in bed (400 lbs) = 2,180 lbs of payload. That's 330 lbs OVER the truck's payload capacity, even though the trailer is well under the published tow rating.

The trailer at 9,000 lbs is fine for the published tow rating. The combination is unsafe because payload is exceeded. Most first-time tow-buyers learn this the hard way.

The booking flow asks for your tow vehicle's make, model, year, trim, and tow package. We look up the J2807-compliant tow rating, GVWR, GCWR, and payload.

We cross-check against the trailer's GVWR (loaded weight) and tongue/pin weight. Mismatches are flagged before payment.

If your tow vehicle is under-spec for the trailer, you have two options: (a) rent a smaller trailer, or (b) rent the trailer with the host's truck bundled.

Tow vehicle: make, model, year, trim. Whether it has factory tow package or aftermarket.

Hitch: receiver class (Class III, IV, V) and visible factory installation. Aftermarket hitches must show installation receipt.

Brake controller: integrated or aftermarket. Working brake controller required for trailers over 3,000 lbs GVWR in every US state.

Insurance: the host maintains and documents a standard auto policy on the tow vehicle; renters bring their own coverage.
