The 5 classes
Class I: up to 2,000 lbs tow weight, 200 lbs tongue weight. Light passenger cars. Suitable for the smallest teardrops (under 1,500 lbs).
Class II: up to 3,500 lbs tow weight, 350 lbs tongue weight. Mid-size cars and crossovers. Lightweight pop-ups and small teardrops.
Class III: up to 8,000 lbs tow weight, 800 lbs tongue weight. Most SUVs and half-ton trucks. The most-common class for travel trailers and pop-ups.
Class IV: up to 12,000 lbs tow weight, 1,200 lbs tongue weight (or 1,700 with weight-distribution hitch). Three-quarter-ton and HD trucks. Heavier travel trailers, larger toy haulers.
Class V: 16,000-20,000 lbs tow weight, 2,000-2,700 lbs tongue weight. HD one-ton trucks. Largest fifth-wheels and toy haulers.
