Boat Rentals in Florida — Inshore, Lake & Coast
Florida is the dominant boating state in the country — the only state where boat rentals plausibly outnumber RV rentals in the PickRV catalogue. Coverage spans inshore skiffs in the Ten Thousand Islands, pontoons on Lake Okeechobee, sailboats out of the Keys, yacht charters from Miami and Lauderdale, and PWC fleets on the Panhandle.

Florida state boating rules
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) — boating- 1
Anyone born on or after Jan 1, 1988 must complete a NASBLA-approved boater safety course to operate a vessel of 10 horsepower or more — verified by FWC.
- 2
Florida requires a free Boating Safety ID Card for the 1988-or-later cohort. Operators must carry the card on the boat.
- 3
All vessels must carry one USCG-approved wearable life jacket per person aboard plus a Type IV throwable for vessels 16 ft and longer.
- 4
Manatee protection zones (winter) impose idle-speed and slow-speed limits in posted areas — fines are aggressive.
What the Florida state agency doesn't tell you
PickRV — first-hand context that the official .gov pages skip.
Winter (Dec-Mar) is peak Florida boating — northern snowbirds plus dry-season clear water. Book 30-60 days ahead for weekends.
Hurricane season (June-Nov) cancellation policy on PickRV honors NHC tropical-storm watch issuance — boats cancel automatically before the watch upgrades to warning.
Florida sales tax (6%) applies to boat rentals — local surtax (0-2.5%) varies by county. The PickRV checkout calculates the right number for the marina county.
Saltwater fishing license is separate from your boat rental — required for anyone over 16 in salt water. Available online from FWC for $17 (7-day non-resident).
Florida prohibits 'spreading the wake' (creating a wake that displaces another vessel) within 100 ft of moored boats — the rule is enforced.
Best season
Year-round, with December–April as peak (dry season, snowbird inflow).

Florida boat rental FAQ
Do I need a Florida boating license?
If you were born on or after Jan 1, 1988, yes — a NASBLA-approved course plus the FWC Boating Safety ID Card. Anyone born before that date is exempt from the course requirement but the safety baseline still applies.
Can I take a rental boat into Bahamas?
Most rental boats are NOT permitted in foreign waters by their hull insurance. Florida-to-Bahamas crossings require explicit written permission from the host and often a rider on the insurance. Most PickRV Florida listings do not allow international waters.
What about hurricane season?
PickRV's boat-side cancellation policy honors NHC tropical-storm watch issuance — your reservation cancels with full refund if a watch covers your pickup region. Marina-issued closures override any other rule.
