Year-round (peak: October – April)
Site of the westernmost engagement of the American Civil War — the Battle of Picacho Pass, April 15, 1862, between a Union cavalry detachment and a Confederate scouting party — commemorated annually in a March re-enactment that genuinely surprises first-time visitors who came for the peak's springtime poppy bloom. The 85-site campground holds 30-amp electric and water hookups at a 36-ft cap, year-round, with the dump station at the entrance. The peak itself rises 1,500 feet above the desert floor immediately east of I-10 and is one of the most recognizable rock formations in southern Arizona. The Hunter Trail's summit ascent uses cable anchors over the final exposed sections and is rated strenuous; Bureau of Land Management's adjacent corridors offer additional dispersed staging for rigs that exceed the campground cap.
