Dim dash backlighting and slow dome-light response
Both run off the chassis battery on most motorhomes. Dim or sluggish indicates chassis voltage below 11 volts.
Inverter alarm but engine cranks
Inverter alarms (low-voltage cutoff at 10.5 to 11 volts) indicate house bank discharge, not chassis. The engine will still crank — pull off and address the house bank discharge cause before continuing.
Slow accessory operation (window, mirror, seat heat)
12-volt accessories with mechanical loads slow visibly as chassis voltage drops. Slow window-down is an early sign.
Solar-controller LED red while plugged in
Some solar controllers (Victron SmartSolar, Renogy Wanderer) display fault codes when the house bank disconnects unexpectedly. Red or amber means the controller cannot find the bank it expected.
DC-DC charger fault light during driving
Modern motorhomes increasingly replace the BIR with a DC-DC charger (Victron Orion-Tr, Renogy DCC30S) that intelligently isolates and charges. A fault light during driving usually means the chassis alternator is undervoltage.
Smell of sulfur from the chassis battery
Flooded lead-acid batteries emit hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg smell) when overcharged or boiling. Open the battery box at the next stop; a smelling battery needs immediate professional attention.

1. Identify which battery system is at fault
Chassis battery: dim headlights, no crank. House battery: dim interior, inverter alarm. They are independent, and confusing the two leads to wrong-system jumping that does nothing.

2. Try the rig's internal boost switch first
Almost every motorhome has one. Engage and hold for 10 seconds, then crank. If the rig does not have a labeled switch, the manual will show the location of the BIR and how to manually bridge it.

3. Identify the chemistry of every battery in the chain
Flooded lead-acid (FLA), absorbed glass mat (AGM), gel, and lithium iron phosphate (LFP) have different charging profiles. Jumping a lithium house bank from a flooded chassis battery confuses the BMS and can lock the bank out of service.

4. Connect cables in the published order
Battery Council International order: red clamp to dead positive, red clamp to good positive, black clamp to good negative, black clamp to a chassis ground point on the dead vehicle (NOT the dead battery's negative post). The chassis-ground step prevents igniting hydrogen vented from the dead battery.

5. Start the donor, then start the dead vehicle
Let the donor run for 5 minutes before cranking the dead vehicle. The donor alternator brings the dead battery up to crankable voltage, which reduces starter-current draw and stress on both batteries.

6. Drive 30 minutes before shutdown
A jumped battery is not a charged battery. The chassis alternator needs 20 to 30 minutes of highway driving to bring the chassis battery back to a state of charge that will hold. Shutting down immediately means the next start will fail the same way.
Prevention
Annual battery load test
Any auto-parts store does a free load test in 5 minutes. The result is a number of CCA (cold cranking amps) the battery actually delivers vs the number printed on the case. Below 75 percent of rated CCA is replacement territory regardless of voltage.
Maintain the BIR or DC-DC charger
If the chassis-to-house isolation device fails open, the chassis battery cannot be replenished from the house solar or shore charger and will discharge from key-off parasitic loads over a multi-week storage period. Test annually with a multimeter.
Trickle-charge during storage
A Battery Tender Plus or NOCO Genius mounted permanently in the battery compartment keeps a chassis battery at full state of charge through months of storage. Solar trickle (5 to 10 watts on the windshield) works for off-grid storage.
Clean terminals annually
Lead-acid terminals corrode with sulfate buildup that increases connection resistance. Annual cleaning with a baking-soda solution followed by terminal protector spray (NOCO NCP2, CRC Battery Terminal Protector) prevents nuisance no-start events.
Replace house bank batteries as a set
Mixing old and new lead-acid batteries in a series or parallel bank pulls the new battery down to the capacity of the old one. Always replace all batteries in a bank simultaneously, and match brand and date code.
Document the install date on every battery
Mark the install month and year on the battery case with a paint pen. Flooded lead-acid: replace at 4 to 5 years. AGM: 5 to 7 years. LFP: 10 years typical but plan on inspection at 7.

Lithium house banks do not behave like lead-acid
An LFP house bank reads close to full voltage (13.2 to 13.4 volts) until very near empty, then drops fast. The dash voltmeter or 'state of charge' meter that was accurate for flooded lead-acid lies to you on lithium. Trust the LFP BMS's reported state of charge, not the voltmeter.
The BIR is not a fuse and not a charger
Battery isolation relays connect house and chassis banks while the engine runs and disconnect them at key-off. They do not regulate charging current; they just close a contact. If the chassis alternator output is wrong, the BIR will faithfully send the wrong charge to the house bank.
Cold cranking amps degrade nonlinearly with age
A 4-year-old flooded battery may read 12.6 volts at rest and still fail a load test at minus 10 degrees F. Voltage is necessary but not sufficient. The CCA load test reveals what the voltage hides.
Solar without a load disconnect can over-discharge a bank
An undersized solar setup at low winter sun can fail to keep up with parasitic loads (propane gas detector, refrigerator control board, security system) and let a bank go to deep discharge over several weeks of storage. Add a low-voltage disconnect (Victron BMV or similar) to break the load below a safe threshold.
Hydrogen ventilation is not optional on flooded lead-acid
Flooded chassis batteries vent hydrogen during charging. The battery box must have a vent path to outside the rig, not to a closed bay. AGM and gel batteries vent in fault conditions only but still benefit from a vent. LFP banks vent inert gases under fault and need their own vented enclosure.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use the house battery bank to jump-start the chassis engine?
Through the rig's built-in battery boost switch or BIR, yes — that is exactly what the switch is designed for. Do NOT run external jumper cables between house and chassis banks if the chemistries differ; the BMS on a lithium bank can lock out, and a flooded house bank can over-discharge during cranking surges.
Why is the chassis battery dead after only two weeks of storage?
Modern motorhome chassis have key-off parasitic loads — chassis computer keep-alive memory, anti-theft system, propane gas detector — that draw 30 to 80 milliamps continuously. Over two weeks that is 10 to 25 amp-hours, enough to drop a chassis battery below crankable voltage. A trickle charger eliminates this.
Should I upgrade my house bank from flooded lead-acid to lithium?
Lithium iron phosphate banks deliver more usable capacity per pound, last longer in cycle life, and tolerate deeper discharge. They cost 3 to 5 times more up front. The upgrade requires a compatible charger (most modern converters are LFP-capable; older ones are not) and ideally a DC-DC charger to manage chassis alternator charging.
Is it true I should not jump a dead battery in cold weather?
Cold reduces both the dead battery's ability to accept charge and the donor's available current. Jumping in cold is harder, not impossible. Let the donor run 10 minutes before cranking, and drive at least 30 minutes after to bring the dead battery back to charge.
How long should a chassis battery last in normal motorhome use?
4 to 5 years for flooded lead-acid in moderate climates, 5 to 7 years for AGM, similar or better for the chassis-spec LFP options now appearing in newer Class A motorhomes. Replace on calendar, not on failure.
