Year-round (limited winter)
Elk Mountain Campground holds 62 sites at a 35-ft cap, runs year-round (water cut off mid-October through mid-April), dry-camp with a seasonal dump station. The above-ground experience is the prairie + ponderosa transition zone — a free-roaming bison herd of roughly 400 animals and one of the densest pronghorn populations in the Black Hills. Cave tours are reservation-based March through November and walk-up only in winter; the boxwork formation in the upper cave is the rarest concentration of that calcite pattern in the world. The park's road network handles 35-ft rigs to every pullout. Custer State Park 12 miles north adds a second basecamp option with full hookups.
