Hatteras Harbor Marina occupies the protected basin at the south end of Hatteras Village inside the Hatteras Inlet system — 70 slips arranged across three piers, a 75-ft vessel-length cap on the outer transient row, and the closest year-round fueling and vessel-pumpout dock to the Gulf Stream's western edge. The warm-water current runs roughly 14 nautical miles offshore from the inlet mouth, the closest mainland-state approach to the Stream anywhere in the lower 48 and the reason the marina has anchored North Carolina's bluewater billfish tournament economy since the 1950s. Channel depth runs 10 ft at the marina basin and the Hatteras Inlet bar is dredged on a seasonal rotation to a target of 12 ft by the USACE Wilmington District under the federal Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway maintenance program — actual bar depth varies day to day with the Diamond Shoals current and operators publish a daily inlet-depth advisory on the marina's VHF Ch. 16 morning broadcast. The Hatteras-to-Ocracoke vehicle ferry runs free from the NPS terminal 0.8 mi from the marina (every 30 minutes peak season, every hour off-season), which lets visiting sportfishers shuttle anglers, crew, and trailer rigs between islands without re-entering the inlet under sail. Hurricane-season planning is the central operating constraint: the marina sits at 6 ft mean elevation and Hurricane Dorian's September 2019 surge breached the basin seawall in two places, forcing a four-month closure and a federal disaster-relief rebuild. Storm-evacuation policy requires all vessels to be removed when NWS Newport/Morehead City posts a Tropical Storm Warning for Dare County. Fuel runs diesel-and-gasoline year-round (one of only three diesel docks south of Oregon Inlet); the pumpout is free with any slip rental. The marina lot prohibits RV parking outright. Frisco Campground (NPS Cape Hatteras National Seashore, dry only, 40-ft rig cap, 127 sites) is the closest RV-friendly basecamp 8 miles north on NC-12; bookings open on recreation.gov 6 months out, and the August billfish tournament weeks book out within the first 90 minutes of the window opening.
