The county in brief
A traveler's read on Porter County
February 15, 2019 — that is the redesignation date on which Indiana Dunes became the 61st unit of the US National Park System with the 'National Park' designation, an act of Congress upgrading the 1966-established Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore to full national-park status without expanding the boundary or adding new resource protections. The political driver was tourism marketing: the National Park designation gives Indiana Dunes equal billing with Yellowstone and Yosemite on every road atlas, mapping app, and search-engine knowledge panel, and the redesignation produced an immediate 26% visitor-count jump from 2018 to 2019 per NPS Visitor Use Statistics. Indiana Dunes is the only NPS unit with an operating integrated steel-mill (the ArcelorMittal Burns Harbor works, since 2024 part of Cleveland-Cliffs after the global ArcelorMittal divestiture, producing 5 million tons of finished steel per year on a 1965-built deepwater Lake Michigan dock complex) inside the park boundary via a 19th-century industrial private inholding that the federal park-creation legislation explicitly carved out and never moved to acquire.
The result is the unique sightline from West Beach where visitors can watch sand-dune ecosystems in the foreground with active steel-mill smokestacks 2 miles east — a juxtaposition the park interpretive program addresses honestly. Porter County's 418 sq mi wrap the central Indiana Dunes NP, the Bailly Homestead historic site (the 1822 trading post of French-Potawatomi fur trader Joseph Bailly, the oldest European-built structure in the Calumet Region), Indiana Dunes State Park (Indiana DNR-managed, immediately adjacent to and visually inseparable from the national park, with the most-photographed Mount Tom dune at 192 ft above lake level), and Valparaiso (population 34,154, the county seat and home of Valparaiso University). Indiana Dunes State Park's campground accepts rigs to 45 ft with electric hookups across 140 sites — the only full-electric RV-friendly base inside Porter County, with reservations 6 months ahead through Indiana State Parks' reservation portal. Dunewood Campground inside the national park accepts rigs to 35 ft on 66 no-hookup sites for the May-October season on recreation.gov. Both parks enforce 14-day max stay. Porter County prohibits overnight RV street parking in unincorporated areas.

Seeing Porter County from a rig
Camping here runs mostly to developed sites and private land, so hookups and a reservation matter more than boondocking range.
