The Salt Creek dam closure in 1965 created Lake Monroe — 10,750 acres at normal pool, the largest inland lake within Indiana state boundaries, built by the US Army Corps of Engineers Louisville District for flood control and water supply to the Bloomington-Monroe County metropolitan system. Today the lake is the only Indiana water body with both a full-service marina concession (Lake Monroe Boat Rental and Fourwinds Marina under separate Corps leases) and more than 600 developed campsites distributed across three Indiana DNR-managed State Recreation Areas on a single shoreline. Monroe County covers 394 sq mi at the eastern edge of the Crawford Upland karst topography, with the Hoosier National Forest occupying roughly 35% of the county's land area in non-contiguous units along the eastern and southeastern boundary. Bloomington (population 79,168, the county seat) is the home of Indiana University Bloomington, the IU Health Bloomington medical complex, and the Cook Group medical-device manufacturing campus that together drive the largest non-Indianapolis private-employer concentration in southern Indiana per Indiana Workforce Development quarterly reports.

The eastern county boundary runs along the Brown County State Park boundary (Indiana's largest state park at 15,776 acres in adjacent Brown County). Paynetown State Recreation Area on Lake Monroe accepts rigs to 50 ft with electric hookups, 314 sites on the Indiana Camping Reservation portal; Hardin Ridge USFS Recreation Area inside the Hoosier NF is the alternative RV-friendly base with first-come dispersed and developed sites (200 sites total, 5 loops, only one loop with electric). Charles C. Deam Wilderness on the Hoosier NF's south-county section is Indiana's only federally-designated wilderness (12,953 acres, no mechanized vehicles, dispersed-camp permitted) and the only place in Indiana where the night-sky Bortle scale routinely registers Class 3 per the Indiana Astronomical Society dark-sky surveys. The B-Line Trail through downtown Bloomington connects RV-friendly state-park staging to the campus, hospital, and Kirkwood Avenue commercial district via a 3.1-mile rails-to-trails conversion.
