New River Gorge became the United States' 63rd National Park in December 2020 — the most-recent NPS designation, and a redesignation from the previously-existing National River category that grandfathered a different rule set. The New River Gorge Bridge at 876 ft above the river is the longest single-span arch bridge in the Western Hemisphere, and the third-highest highway bridge in the United States.
Fayette County wraps the entire 53-mile NPP, the Bridge Day Festival (third Saturday in October, the only US bridge that legally permits BASE jumping), and Fayetteville as the gateway town. Babcock SP (Glade Creek Grist Mill) accepts rigs to 35 ft with electric hookups.
