Whooping cranes arrive at Aransas NWR in mid-October from the 2,500-mile migration off Wood Buffalo National Park (northern Alberta) and stay through April — the only naturally-wintering wild flock of the species on Earth, currently 540+ birds per USFWS 2023 aerial winter survey. The recovery arc from a 1941 census of 16 birds total to over 500 today is the longest continuous endangered-species monitoring program in the United States; refuge biologists fly individual-recognition surveys every 10 days through the winter and the Whooping Crane Conservation Association publishes weekly count updates that birders use to schedule visits. Aransas County wraps Rockport (population 10,373, the county seat) and Fulton on Aransas Bay, plus the Lamar Peninsula and Live Oak Peninsula that form the northern Coastal Bend estuary system.

Goose Island State Park at the Lamar tip accepts rigs to 35 ft with electric hookups and holds 'The Big Tree' — a coastal live oak whose ring-count estimate places germination around AD 1000, with a 35-ft trunk circumference; the Texas State Forester named it the state's official champion live oak in 1969. Rockport's working-shrimp-fleet harbor and Fulton Mansion State Historic Site anchor the year-round tourism economy; the city was rebuilt post-2017 Hurricane Harvey (Category 4 landfall over Aransas Pass) and most boardwalks, marinas, and birding-platform infrastructure have been brought back online per Texas General Land Office recovery reports. Practical RV staging on the bay also includes Copano Bay State Fishing Pier and Lighthouse Lakes Paddling Trail launch points — both adjacent to the FM-1781 corridor that loops Aransas to the Port Aransas Ferry on Mustang Island.
