An estimated 8,000-12,000 people died in the September 8, 1900 Galveston Hurricane — a Category 4 landfall that remains the deadliest natural disaster in United States history per the National Weather Service Atlantic Tropical Cyclone Database. The catastrophe drove the construction of the Galveston Seawall, the 17-ft-tall, 10-mile-long concrete barrier completed in 1904 (raised to current 17-ft height by 1963 per the Galveston District Army Corps construction history) that defines the island's modern southern coastline and shaped every subsequent Texas coastal building code. Galveston County's 875 sq mi span Galveston Island (32 miles long, the longest US barrier island after Padre), the Bolivar Peninsula (reached only by the free Galveston-Bolivar Ferry operated by TxDOT), and the mainland NASA/Clear Lake commercial corridor including the Johnson Space Center (the JSC sits in Harris County, but the supporting bedroom communities Clear Lake City and Friendswood are Galveston County).

Galveston Island State Park on the western half of the island accepts rigs to 35 ft with electric+water hookups on 150 sites split between the Bay Side (sheltered, with bird-blind access to West Galveston Bay) and the Gulf Side (oceanfront, exposed to wind), separated by FM-3005 (San Luis Pass Road). Reservations open 5 months out through TPWD's online reservation system; March-April spring break and any Friday-night summer date routinely sell out within hours per TPWD 2024 booking analytics. The 1928 Hotel Galvez on the Seawall (now Hotel Galvez & Spa) is the oldest continuously-operating beachfront resort hotel on the Texas coast and a Historic Hotel of America per National Trust designation. City of Galveston Municipal Code §34-93 prohibits overnight RV parking on the Seawall, on the Strand (the 1880s cast-iron commercial district), and across the historic East End landmark district — Galveston Island SP is the only legal in-island RV-friendly base. The Galveston-Port Bolivar Ferry runs 24/7 free of charge, accommodating RVs to 45 ft per TxDOT vehicle-size limits, with crossing times of 18 minutes and typical waits of 30-45 minutes on summer weekends.
