Rally week in early August books every bed and boat within two hours of Rapid City. Black Hills water is either impossible or oddly empty that week depending which lake you pick.
Pactola sits inside the Black Hills National Forest and is a municipal source for Rapid City; the restrictions are stricter than the postcard suggests.
The chalkstone bluffs on Lewis & Clark look solid and are not — they crumble, and anchoring tight to them is how people lose ground tackle.
