Flathead is big enough to make its own weather: a south wind builds three-foot chop across 28 miles of fetch inside an hour, and the west shore offers almost no shelter.
Wild Horse Island is a state park with no facilities and no overnight use — day landing only, and the bighorn sheep on it are wild animals, not scenery.
Fort Peck's shoreline is bentonite clay. After rain the access roads turn to grease that will strand a truck and trailer for a full day.
AIS inspection stations run seasonal hours and close at night; arriving at Ravalli after hours means waiting for morning before you can legally launch.
Hebgen sits in a seismically active basin — the 1959 quake dropped the Madison canyon, and the lake still holds drowned timber that is a genuine prop hazard at low water.

Late May-September. Peak: July-August. Flathead's surface tops out in the mid-60s, so a wetsuit extends the season more than the calendar does.

Do I have to stop at inspection stations with a rented boat?
Yes. The requirement follows the watercraft, not the owner. Hosts hand over the current decal and paperwork, and you are still expected to stop at every open station on your route.
Is Flathead warm enough to swim?
By August sheltered bays reach the mid-60s in the top few feet. The main lake stays colder and drops past 300 feet — it does not warm through the way a shallow reservoir does.
