New Jersey permits no open dispersed camping; Wharton's wilderness campsites are designated, reserved and vehicle-accessible.
Pine Barrens sand roads strand vehicles routinely — Quaker Bridge and the deeper interior routes are not two-wheel-drive terrain.
State park camping seasons run roughly April through October, with limited year-round sites.
Island Beach State Park has no camping at all, and its vehicle beach access requires a separate surf-fishing permit.
Overnight parking is prohibited at nearly every shore municipality's beach lot and enforced hard from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

The Pine Barrens water is tea-colored from cedar tannin and it is clean — the color scares first-timers and locals swim in it happily.
Wharton's sand roads swallow vehicles most weekends; the state has posted closures on the worst routes and tow bills out of the interior are eye-watering.
Greenhead flies own the salt marsh from early July into August and they bite through clothing — shore van trips are noticeably better in June or September.
The Delaware Water Gap ridge sees the whole Appalachian Trail thru-hiker wave in June and July, and the NJ side is quieter and cheaper than the Pennsylvania side.
Cape May at the southern tip is a major migratory bottleneck; the autumn hawk and songbird counts there are internationally known and cost nothing to watch.

No dispersed camping is permitted. Wharton and Brendan Byrne have designated vehicle-accessible sites that feel remote, but they are reserved and paid.
Can I drive a van on the Pine Barrens sand roads?
On the maintained gravel routes, yes. The deep interior sand roads regularly strand two-wheel-drive vehicles, and several are formally closed to protect the habitat.
