Camper van is the catch-all for smaller, often vintage-style, often non-Sprinter-class conversion vans. VW Westfalia, VW Vanagon, VW Bus, mid-size Toyota / Nissan conversions, and modern micro-camper builds. The fish that wins on charm + size, loses on space + amenities.

When the Camper Van wins — and loses
It wins when
Trips with charm + photo-op value (Westfalia on PCH, Vanagon at music festival). Couples or solo trips with minimal gear needs. Trips under a week.
It loses when
Trips requiring climate control beyond 'crack a window'. Trips longer than a week (the small space gets old). Trips at altitude (most pre-2000 VW air-cooled engines struggle).

What official guides don't tell you
Vintage Westfalia + Vanagon reliability is good IF maintained — carry a third-party roadside/RV membership + a satellite communicator. Many roadside-tow providers refuse vintage VW, so confirm coverage for older air-cooled rigs before you go.
VW air-cooled engines hate altitude — Colorado / Utah at 10,000+ ft loses meaningful power. Plan slower speeds.
Westfalia pop-top zipper is the first thing that fails on used rentals — visually check during walkthrough.
Modern micro-camper conversions (Toyota Sienna camper, etc) are excellent for stealth city overnighting — fits standard parking spaces.
VW Bus 21-window panoramas are collector cars — handle gently, expect attention.
