About the ProMaster
The Ram ProMaster is the FCA/Stellantis answer to Sprinter and Transit. Italian-designed (Fiat Ducato platform), front-wheel drive, with the widest interior of any van in the segment — a 4 ft wide bed fits sideways without truncating storage. The FWD layout drops the floor lower than Sprinter or Transit (no driveshaft hump), making conversions roomier.

Honest fit
When the ProMaster wins — and loses
It wins when
Trips where interior width matters more than ground clearance. Tall renters (6'4" + ceiling). Trips on paved roads in regions with snow but not extreme off-road need. Budget #vanlife trips (lowest premium).
It loses when
Off-pavement trips (FWD struggles on loose surfaces — no AWD option). Trips in mountainous terrain where engine breaking on long descents matters (FWD trans heats faster). Trips above 8,000 ft (V6 loses power; non-turbo loses more than turbo).

What official guides don't tell you
FWD ProMaster goes where you can drag a sedan — gravel forest service roads are fine, snowed-over high passes are not.
ProMaster step-in height is the lowest of the three big vans (about 16 inches vs 18-20 for Sprinter/Transit) — best for older renters or accessibility.
ProMaster electrical layout (vs Sprinter) typically gives easier solar wiring access — battery box under driver's seat is reachable.
Pentastar V6 fuel economy is 16-18 mpg in conversion trim — middle of the pack.
FCA dealer parts are widely available; the Italian DNA (Fiat Ducato shared parts in Europe) means import parts are sometimes faster to source than American specs.
