Lake McConaughy permits vehicle camping directly on the beach with a park entry and camping permit — one of very few places in the US where that is legal.
The Nebraska National Forest and Oglala National Grassland allow dispersed camping outside developed recreation areas.
A Nebraska state park entry permit is required per vehicle, separate from any camping fee.
Sandhills county roads are literal sand in places; a two-wheel-drive van should stay on maintained gravel and highways.
There is no shade and very little wind shelter across most of the state's public land — high winds are a routine planning factor.
