Renting an RV in Aspen: what to know before pickup
Aspen has its own arrival logistics. Difficult Campground handles both the first night and the free dump station. One street-parking ordinance applies to RVs here — cited in full in the arrival guide.
Street parking reality
This is a rule that no longer exists, and that is the useful fact: unlike Durango or Steamboat, Aspen has no vehicle-habitation ban on the books. Everything that constrains you in Aspen is general parking law, snow…
Aspen Municipal Code Sec. 24.04.040 (Reserved) — editor's note to repealed former § 22-5 · +1 more in the guide
Dump stations & water
- Difficult Campground — free, potable water
Camp the first night
- Difficult Campground · 4 mi out · No hookups; potable water at host station
Skip the classic mistake
Driving Independence Pass (CO-82) in a vehicle over 35 ft length
Best window: Mid-June through September — Aspen summer green season and Maroon Bells access.
The Aspen window to avoid
November through April — Aspen ski season; Independence Pass closed.
What that mistake costs
Hairpin turns, 8% grades, 12,095 ft pass; rigs over 35 ft prohibited per CO DOT
Day one, after you pick the rig up
- Top off propane at U-Haul of Glenwood Springs, 2812 Glen Ave, Glenwood Springs, CO 81601, on arrival day if tanks read below 30%.
- Drive direct to Difficult Campground — Aspen Code Sec. 24.04.040 restricts overnight on-street parking in residential zones.
- Verify scenic-drive open status on Independence Pass Scenic Drive (CO-82) (some seasonal closures).
