More on Mesa Verde National ParkField notes, rig limits by loop, seasons, what to do, quiet spots
Mesa Verde National Park protects roughly 52,000 acres of pinyon-juniper mesa in Montezuma County, southwest Colorado, about an hour west of Durango and 10 miles east of Cortez. Established in 1906 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1978, it preserves some 5,000 archaeological sites including the famous Ancestral Puebloan cliff dwellings. There is exactly one in-park campground — Morefield, about 4 miles past the entrance — with 267 sites but only 15 full-hookup spots. Everything worth seeing sits 20-plus miles up a steep, switchbacking entrance road; the cliff-dwelling tours (Cliff Palace, Balcony House, Long House) are ticketed through Recreation.gov and sell out fast in peak summer.
The notes below are PickRV's editorial record. Only the figures in the strip at the top of the page, each with its link and date, were re-read on the park's own pages.
What the official site doesn't tell you
PickRV editor's field notes
NPS.gov tells you Morefield has 267 sites but soft-pedals the real RV bottleneck: only 15 of those have full hookups (the Ute Loop), they're concessioner-run by Aramark on a separate reservation track from the rest, and they're the first thing gone in peak summer — everyone else dry-camps with no electric, water, or sewer. Second trap: nothing important is near the campground. The cliff dwellings are 20-plus miles up a brutal switchback climb, so plan to either tow nothing and drive your rig up daily (eating fuel and brakes) or set up at Morefield and shuttle up in a towed car you LEFT at the campground — trailers aren't allowed past it anyway. Third, the best-preserved ruin, Long House, is only reachable via Wetherill Mesa Road, which bans anything over 25ft or 8,000lb — so a big rig literally cannot drive there; you must transfer to a smaller vehicle. Fourth, the upside no guide mentions: Morefield's village has a free dump station, showers, laundry, gas, and a grocery store on-site, which is rare for an in-park campground — you can fully resupply without leaving the gate.
Rig limits by loop and road
Length + clearance
- ·Park-wide, our record: 46 ft
- ·Wetherill Mesa Road (to Long House + Step House): 25 ft — Hard 25ft length limit AND an 8,000lb weight limit due to tight curves and steep grades — most motorhomes and any towed trailer are banned; open only ~late May to mid-October, gate closes early afternoon
- ·Chapin Mesa main road (Cliff Palace / Balcony House / Mesa Top Loop): 46 ft — Open to all rig sizes up to the 46ft campground ceiling, but it's a 20+ mile steep, narrow, switchbacking climb — allow ~75 minutes from the entrance to Cliff Palace and watch brakes/transmission temps
- ·Tunnel on the main entrance road between mileposts 4 and 5: 20.5ft (≈12'8" effective per signage) height-restricted — most RVs clear it, but measure any rooftop AC/antenna and oversized cargo
- ·Trailers and towed vehicles are not permitted past Morefield Campground toward Chapin/Wetherill Mesa — unhitch and leave the trailer at the campground or the Visitor Center lot
- ·Switchback entrance grade is hard on underpowered rigs; downshift on the descent rather than riding brakes
Dump + generator
- ·Dump station: Morefield Campground village (free, concessioner-operated by Aramark) (Free for campground guests)
- ·Generators: Daytime only in the dry-camping loops; NO generators in the tent loop; quiet hours 10pm-6am enforced
Boondock alternative within 20-45 min — dispersed BLM is free with no facilities; arrive with full water and empty tanks, dump at Morefield or a Cortez RV park
BLM and San Juan National Forest dispersed sites west/north of Cortez and along the Mancos area; commercial RV parks in Cortez and Mancos for full hookups
Seasons and closures
Full season: Late April - mid October (Morefield Campground open ~Apr 24-Oct 18; cliff-dwelling tours run early May to mid/late October; Wetherill Mesa Road open ~May 22-Oct 21)
Limited access: Year-round park entry and the self-guided Mesa Top Loop stay open in winter (snow and ice possible on the high mesa road), but the campground, Far View Lodge, ranger-guided cliff tours, and Wetherill Mesa all close for the season
Known closures:
- ·Wetherill Mesa Road: closed roughly mid-October through late May; even in season the gate closes to entry early afternoon (~2pm) with all visitors out by 4pm
- ·Cliff-dwelling ranger tours (Cliff Palace, Balcony House, Long House): no winter tours — operate early May to mid/late October only, ticket required via Recreation.gov
- ·Far View Lodge and the Far View dining/Visitor area: seasonal, closed in winter
- ·Mesa Verde Museum: closed for renovation into late April 2026 — verify reopening on NPS.gov before relying on it
- ·Snow/ice can temporarily close the steep entrance switchbacks in winter — carry chains and check conditions

- Balcony House
- Adventurous ticketed tour with ladders and a crawl tunnel; on Chapin Mesa, reachable by any rig size up the main road
- Mesa Top Loop Road

Standard Class R license covers motorhomes under 26,001 lbs
Colorado's ordinary Class R license is defined as any motor vehicle with a GVWR of less than 26,001 lbs as a single unit or in combination (15 or fewer passengers, no hazmat) — so it covers personal-use motorhomes and typical trailer combos. A single vehicle of 26,001+ lbs GVWR requires a Class B CDL; a combination over 26,000 lbs GCWR towing 10,000+ lbs requires a Class A CDL.

Operators 18+; ages 14-17 need a safety certificate; ANS stamp to launch
In Colorado anyone operating a motorboat or personal watercraft must be at least 18, and 14- to 17-year-olds may operate one only after completing and passing a state-approved boating safety course and carrying the certificate. Operators over 17 need no course, though CPW strongly encourages one. Every motorized or trailered boat and sailboat also needs an Aquatic Nuisance Species stamp and a certified ANS inspection before it launches.

Colorado OHV permit $26.25/yr — same price for residents and visitors
Any OHV used on Colorado public land needs a CPW registration or permit for the April 1 to March 31 year. Residents and non-residents both pay $26.25, which includes a $1.25 Search and Rescue surcharge, and the fee cannot be prorated for a partial year. Helmets are required for operators and passengers under 18 on public OHV trails.

0.08% BAC per se; 5 ng THC creates only a permissible inference
Colorado charges DUI per se at a BAC of 0.08 or more, measured at the time of driving or within two hours of it. There is no equivalent per-se charge for drugs: 5 ng/mL or more of active delta-9 THC in whole blood only allows a court to infer that the driver was under the influence, and the driver can rebut that inference. Cannabis is legal for adults 21 and over, but driving impaired is still prosecuted as DUI.
