More on Castle Rock State ParkField notes, rig limits by loop, seasons, what to do, quiet spots
Castle Rock State Park is a 2,000-acre Illinois state park in Ogle County, on the Rock River. The 65-site RV campground is the quieter alternative to nearby Starved Rock SP (1hr SE, much more crowded). Sandstone bluffs along the river include the iconic Castle Rock formation. Trail system covers 6mi with river overlooks.
The notes below are PickRV's editorial record. None of their figures has been re-read on the park's own pages yet.
What the official site doesn't tell you
PickRV editor's field notes
The Illinois DNR site lists Castle Rock as 'Rock River sandstone bluffs' but doesn't tell you that the FAMOUS Castle Rock formation (the namesake) is closed to climbing — and the overlook from the trail is 30ft above the formation, not at-eye-level. Most photographers expect a Castle Rock-from-river shot; that requires renting a kayak from Oregon IL town (10min N). Second non-obvious: the park sits between Starved Rock (1hr SE) and Mississippi Palisades SP (45min W) — the loop of 3 northern IL sandstone parks is a better trip than just one. Third: the Lowden State Park 'Black Hawk statue' is 8min N — 48ft Native American figure, free, photographer's bonus.
