Red Navajo Sandstone cliffs ring a 7,400-acre canyon ten miles north of St. George — geologically distinct from the larger Zion–Kolob system to the east because Snow Canyon also holds extensive basalt lava tubes from eruptions only 27,000 years ago. The campground holds 36 sites with electric and water hookups at a 40-ft cap, year-round operation, and the dump station sits near the entrance. St. George's dry-warm winter climate makes this one of the few Utah state parks that stays comfortably bookable December through February — most visitors arriving from northern latitudes for winter sun. Reservations open 4 months ahead. The Lava Flow Overlook Trail and the Petrified Sand Dunes are the two distinct geological story lines; the slot canyon at Jenny's Canyon closes mid-March through early June for raptor nesting.
