Year-round
A seven-mile causeway carries every vehicle from Syracuse out across the Great Salt Lake to the island — and the wind off the lake is consistently the operating constraint, gusting 40+ mph spring and fall and triggering causeway closures for high-profile vehicles whenever sustained wind clears 50 mph. The Bridger Bay Campground holds 26 sites at a 40-ft cap, dry-camp only with a dump station at the entrance; the White Rock Bay Group Camp and the Bridger Bay overflow handle larger gatherings. The brine-fly emergence (mid-May through August) coats every reflective surface for two miles in either direction of the campground and the smell — vegetal, sulphurous, persistent — surprises every first-time visitor. The free-roaming bison herd of roughly 700 animals is the longest-managed conservation herd in Utah and the November roundup is a public event.
