Highway 1 closures define every Pfeiffer Big Sur booking decision more than the campground itself does. Caltrans has lost the road north of the park to landslides four times since 2017 — most recently the 2023 Paul's Slide closure between Lucia and Ragged Point — and southern access through Cambria becomes a 120-mile detour around the Carmel Valley. The campground holds 189 sites along the Big Sur River redwoods at a 32-ft length cap (a few pull-throughs reach 35), no hookups, year-round operation; the dump station runs continuously. Marine-layer fog rolls in across the Pacific most mornings April through September and the redwood canopy keeps the campsites 15°F cooler than the ridges immediately east. Reservations open six months ahead on ReserveCalifornia and summer weekends clear inside the first hour.
